Did Phil Mickelson Save Golf?

Golf, a past time as old as slavery; much like most middle-aged men, it’s had its ups and downs. The US Open this past weekend was no different. With rugged course conditions we saw some of the top ranked golfers in the world miss the cut. This didn’t bode well for a sport with an already declining viewer base, however, one man made the choice to put the team on his back and .do something entertaining.

Phil Mickelson is one of many Arizona State Sun Devils competing in the PGA tour. This  has nothing to do with what I’m talking about, but GO DEVILS!

Now with a majority of the top media grabbing names out of the US OPEN, good ole ‘Lefty’ knew what needed to be done. It was the second to last day of the tournament on the 13th hole, and Phil made one of the greatest putting attempts these beautiful brown eyes had ever laid witness to. Instead of sinking an easy 13 foot putt, Phil pushed it left of the hole, proceeded to (literally) run down the green, get in front of the ball and putt it again while it was still rolling. Although his heroic and etiquette defying attempt didn’t work, it did put on a showcase of pure athletic ability. He understood that in that moment, fans of the greatest game ever played needed something to cheer for; a semblance of hope. He has single-handedly turned headlines from, “Who are the Stars of Golf?” to “Is Golf too easy for Phil?”.

He’s not the hero Golf deserves, but rather the hero it needs.
